Version 13 to be released by 7 July 2025
A new version of Q-BEx will be released on the 7th of July 2025. It will feature the following improvements:
- When someone fills in the questionnaire, they will no longer see the webpage menus at the top of the page.
- We have improved the professional user interface by adding information to the options that can be chosen.
- It is no longer necessary to include parental education in order to obtain a Language Richness score. If you include parental education, it will be incorporated in the score. If you don’t include parental education, the score will be calculated without it. The score remains valid in both cases.
- If the child has not yet started combining words, respondents will now be able to select “not yet”.
- We have added a question asking who is filling the questionnaire (i.e., caregiver 1, caregiver 2, or another person). That information will be included in the child’s individual report and in the output spreadsheets.
- In the output spreadsheet, cells will remain empty if a question was not asked. Zeros will be interpretable as true zeros (rather than missing data).
- The output spreadsheet will include some additional columns:
- Period.count: the number of periods in the child’s life (relating to the Cumulative estimates sub-module, in the Language exposure and use module)
- Last.period.length: the length of the last period specified by the respondent in the Cumulative Estimates sub-module.
- Home.current.exposure.from.adults.[language].unweighted: for each language, the amount of exposure from adults in the home (average of “speaking.to.child.at.home.in.[language]” across adults, excluding those who don’t speak)
- Home.current.exposure.from.children.[language].unweighted: for each language, the amount of exposure from children in the home (average of “speaking.to.child.at.home.in.[language]” across children, excluding those who don’t speak)
- The number of adults in the household
- The number of children in the household
If you are currently running a study using Q-BEx, please make sure you download all your data before the 7th of July. All your data will remain available after that date. But for subsequent data downloads, you may need to adapt your data wrangling to take into account the changes in how zeros and missing values should be interpreted in the output spreadsheets.
